Cannon

The exhibition for “Cannon” looks at a character who seems calm on the outside but is simmering within. Lucy, known as Cannon, works as a cook and is known for never losing her temper—the opposite of a cannon. But inside, she is struggling with her mental health, caring for her tyrannical grandfather, and suffering under her emotionally distant mother. In her strained friendship with Trish, who secretly uses Cannon’s family drama as material for her writing, she also finds it hard to set boundaries. Lee Lai’s sensitive story captures the lives of two queer women in their twenties with a sharp sense of humour. The comic was published by Canadian publisher Drawn & Quarterly in 2025 and won the Stella Award in 2026.
